- I was deeply saddened and disturbed to learn of the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya that claimed the lives of Ambassador Christopher Stephens and three other Americans. Ambassador Stephens was a well-known figure in Libya, and was deeply involved in helping the Libyan people in their transition from the Qaddafi dictatorship.
I have had the privilege of meeting many of our dipl...omats and USAID professionals overseas and I have always been struck by their dedication and their willingness to take risks in pursuit of a better world. They are America’s first line of defense and today’s loss should serve as a reminder to all Americans of the risks that our diplomats and foreign assistance officers encounter every day.See More - LikesSee All

- Today, we remember those lost eleven years ago on September 11th, 2001. And we remember the extraordinary acts of bravery and heroism performed by courageous passengers and crew on United Flight 93, by the first responders who rushed into burning buildings, and by the thousands of nameless volunteers who provided assistance on that terrible day. We think, too, of our troops around the world who stand in harms way to prevent another September 11th. We lost a great deal on that tragic day, but America also revealed herself to be as resilient as ever, and a continuing home of the brave.
- This past month, we saw mixed economic news once again, as our unemployment rate nationally dropped to 8.1%, but only added 96,000 jobs. While this is our 30th straight month of positive private sector job growth, this number is too low to meet the demand of those looking for work and new entrants like college graduates. It's time to move on the manufacturing, onshoring and hiring incentives the Administration has proposed to give our economy a jumpstart. And its long past time to reach agreement on the fiscal issues that we confront at the end of the year -- and stop kicking that can down the road.

Incredible! After 35 years, NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft is nearing the edge of our solar system, and will soon be the first man-made object to leave our solar system. And even after traveling nearly 11 billion miles from Earth, Voyager is still sending back data every day about the conditions of our solar system and will continue to do so for another decade.- I joined a panel discussion along with the Truman National Security Project on the importance of energy independence to our national security. With many of our most pressing national security and economic challenges associated with energy, securing access to affordable clean energy is absolutely essential in the 21st Century. I am committed to growing homegrown green energy and increasing research funding for alternative energy in order to make the United States the world’s leader in this cutting-edge industry.

- Over the years, there have been dozens of students and recent graduates who have volunteered their time, talent and knowledge as interns for our District Congressional Office. And while they are only with our office for a short amount of ti...me, they remain part of our family. This week, I hosted a reunion dinner for many of them and wanted to share with you a photo from that event. Thank you all for your service over the years, and can’t wait for the next reunion!See More
- It was wonderful to tour Fortner Engineering in Glendale this week, and meet with management and employees to talk about what we can do to create more good-paying local jobs and kick start the economy. Keep up the great work.
- Earlier this week I presented South Pasadena residents Niklas Hathaway and Anna-Lena (through her mother) –- with Bronze and Gold Congressional Awards. Their commitment towards public service should make all South Pasadenans proud! Congratulations Niklas and Anna-Lena!
- 92 years ago, we ratified the 19th Amendment, recognizing women’s right to vote and participate in our democracy. And on this day, we mark the achievements women have made across the spectrum of American society, but we also acknowledge how much work remains. As a proud father of a wonderful daughter, I know firsthand the importance of ensuring all Americans have equal rights and equal access to opportunities.
- Today, an American hero and icon passed away. Neil Armstrong inspired a nation and we mourn his passing.

Glad to see new home sales are up 3.6 percent last month. We won't fully recover until the housing market comes back.Adam Schiff shared a link.
Appalling to see that Caltrans spent millions on house repairs, including over $100,000 to fix a roof or make other repairs on properties in the 710 corridor. What an unconscionable waste of taxpayer funds.Adam Schiff shared a link.
Glad to see that California added 25,000 jobs in July, the 12th month of job gains in a row and the biggest increase in the country. We still have a long way to go, with the 3rd highest unemployment in the country, but an encouraging sign of progress.- Wonderful to attend the Eagle Scout ceremony for three local triplets - Adam, Brett and Chad Rahtz of La Crescenta - and present them with an American flag and certificate in recognition of their achievement. Congratulations!

Please take a moment to read my op-ed in the Washington Post about the need to fully fund future Mars missions. Even after Curiosity, the Mars program — the crown jewel of NASA’s incredibly successful and popular planetary science program — is trying to fend off devastating attacks on its budget.- Wonderful to attend the grand opening of the new Burbank center for All for Health, Health for All. Thanks for all of the important work you do for the underserved populations in our community, and keep up the great work!
