Putting Congress Back in the Driver’s Seat

During the lame duck session, I thought Congress had the opportunity to change our current direction and start acting in best interest of the American taxpayer.

I am frustrated with the continued recklessness of government spending. We cannot continue down this road of blank checks and uncontrollable debt. I believe we must put Congress back in control of the American taxpayers’ money.

Last week, I took action and introduced H.R. 7276 legislation to amend the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008.  My legislation requires Congress to approve of the Treasury’s plans before the remaining funds from the bailout legislation can be used. With this approach, no funds beyond the first $350 billion could be spent until after Congress passes a resolution that specifically approves of Treasury’s plan.   Congress should have another up or down vote on using these funds. As you might know, under the current law Treasury can spend funds without the approval of Congress.

I believe the federal government must be held accountable for the decisions made on behalf of the American taxpayers. Congress must step back and evaluate all possible alternatives. We must stabilize our financial markets while ensuring the federal government has a proper exit strategy from these interventions.

Take Time to Celebrate Families

As we gather together over the Thanksgiving holiday, we must take time and recognize the many families that make up this diverse country.

In today’s ever changing world, families are the strong support system our children rely on to become responsible and productive members of the community.  During National Family Week, I encourage everyone to spend a few minutes reflecting on the importance of families in our society.  A strong America relies on strong families.

As our families come together, we should also remember those who are able not joining their families to celebrate Thanksgiving this week.   Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those men and women in the military serving far away from home. We are thankful for the sacrifices you and your families have made on behalf of our great country and pray for your safe return.

Important Dates for Military Families

With Christmas fast approaching, the mail rush is already beginning. For those military families considering what to send their loved ones overseas, there are several important postal dates you should remember.

For those who have family members serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, holiday packages and mail should be sent no later than December 4th. If a member of your family is serving in another part of the world, holiday mail should be shipped no later than December 11th.
