Curbing Spending and Debt

Last week, the House and Senate considered plans for the federal government to provide loans to the U.S. automotive industry. 

Although I voted against the flawed package, I do not believe Congress can allow the auto industry to collapse.  However, we must find a solution that will not put any additional strain on the American taxpayers.

I believe Congress should not be in the business of choosing winners and losers among different industries. Instead, Congress should focus on solutions that empower individuals and businesses to succeed in the economy, rather than solutions that make them more dependent on the federal government.

Congress cannot keep supporting government expansion while at the same time driving up the deficit.  We can promote economic growth by increasing incentives for people to work, save and invest. 

Americans also need to change their attitude about spending and debt. Just like the federal government, we know many Americans have been living beyond their means and relying heavily on debt.  We must all take a hard look how we use debt and credit and use it more responsibly.

We cannot keep borrowing and spending at the expense of our children’s future. If we begin implementing solutions now, we can start taking the right steps to making America’s financial system and economy stronger.

Progress in Iraq and Afghanistan

Over the weekend, President Bush travelled to both Iraq and Afghanistan. During his trip, two historic agreements were signed. These agreements, a Strategic Framework Agreement (SFA) and Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), will help continue to establish economic and political security within Iraq. With the help of the SFA and SOFA, we will continue to support Iraq as it moves to a secure and stable nation within the Middle East.

President Bush also traveled to Afghanistan and met with President Hamid Karzai and spoke with our troops serving in the region. Having recently returned from a trip to Afghanistan, I have seen with my own eyes the progress we are making.  Although we continue to face tough challenges from the Taliban, we are making steady progress in ensuring a free and secure nation can grow and prosper.
