Firefighters battle blaze in Tonto National Forest

Firefighters Sunday were battling a 100-acre blaze burning twomiles from the Tonto Fish Hatchery in the Big Canyon area of the Tonto National Forest, officials said Sunday. The "Big Canyon Fire" was reported about 10:30 a.m. Sunday about 14 miles east of Payson in a rough and remote area of the forest, according to David Albo, Tonto National Forest spokesman.

Gosar hosts hearing on Regional Haze Rule

JOHNS — Stating he asked the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to hold a public hearing in St. Johns and they refused, Congressman Paul Gosar took it upon himself to set up and host a public hearing on the controversial Regional Haze Rule. Held at the St. Johns High School auditorium on Friday, September 7, the public hearing was both recorded on video and transcribed. All comments made will be sent to the EPA before the September 15 deadline for public comment.

And the loss of vegetation can cause soil erosion. But Forest officials have been managing the burnt area to keep possible flooding down. And they’ve been having some success.

There were dire predictions heading into summer of a second consecutive devastating wildfire season in Arizona. Last year one million acres burned and the state recorded its largest wildfire when the Wallow Fire charred almost 550,000 acres and forced the evacuation of thousands of people in eastern Arizona.

2 fires burning in Arizona's Tonto National Forest

One fire in Arizona's Tonto National Forest is 15 percent contained and another also is being slowed by rainfall. Forest officials say the Charley Fire burning three miles west of Sunflower is at an estimated 2,300 acres. But they say cooler temperatures, higher humidity and some precipitation kept fire activity to a minimum Wednesday.
