RICHMOND ANNOUNCES ORLEANS PARISH SCHOOL BOARD RECEIVES $7.2 MILLION IN FEMA LOAN FORGIVENESS

Nov 2, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC- Six months after he petitioned FEMA, Congressman Cedric Richmond (LA-02) announced today that Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) would receive $7.2 million in additional loan forgiveness of its post-Katrina Community Disaster Loans.

In May of this year, Congressman Richmond and Senator Mary Landrieu wrote to FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate about the importance of forgiving OPSB and other local entities’ post-Katrina Community Disaster Loans. In the letter, they asked Fugate to “take into account the uniqueness of our issue and the importance of the forgiveness of the loans to our recovery.”

“We were promised a clear pathway to post-Katrina Community Disaster Loan forgiveness, but that has not been the case. However, this announcement is a step in the right direction for our children, our schools, and our community,” said Congressman Richmond.

OPSB is responsible for paying all principle and related interest not cancelled according to the original terms and conditions of the loan.
