HURRICANE RECOVERY RESOURCES

Super Storm Sandy devestated Eastern Long Island, and the effects of the storm continue in our area though the storm itself has passed.

This page will be updated regularly with additional resources.

We remain concerned about the potential of a Nor'Easter affecting our area next week. Click to get the latest from the National Weather Service's New York Office.

Gasoline Shortage:

The gas shortage is temporary but extremely frustrating to all of us, and potentially dangerous for those operating generators to power medical equipment or electric heat. I have expressed the severity of the situation to top officials at the US Coast Guard who are helping to coordinate the delivery of fuel barges to terminals on Long Island, and they are doing everything they can. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has issued a temporary limit of one fill up per motorist. Residents are urged to reduce driving to the extent possible until the situation improves. Motorists who feel they were overcharged for gasoline should keep their receipt and report the offending merchant to the Suffolk County consumer affairs hotline at 1-800-909-5423.

If Your Home or Business Was Damaged in the Storm:

The first step should be to catalog the damage to your property and report it to your insurance provider.

Then, apply for federal assistance:

  • Affected residents and business owners can begin the disaster application process by registering online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, by web enabled mobile device at m.fema.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Disaster assistance applicants, who have a speech disability or hearing loss and use TTY, should call 1-800-462-7585 directly; for those who use 711 or Video Relay Service (VRS), call 1-800-621-3362.
  • The toll-free telephone numbers are available from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. (local time) Monday through Sunday until further notice.  Applicants registering for aid should be prepared to provide basic information about themselves (name, permanent address, phone number), insurance coverage and any other information to help substantiate losses.
  • Business owners should see if they are eligible for Small Business Administration Disaster Loans
