About Us

The Republican members of the Select Committee are committed to finding common-sense, positive ideas to confront global warming. Select Committee Republicans believe that climate change can be addressed without raising taxes and increasing regulation. By encouraging research into advanced energy technology, the government can make a positive impact on the environment while also making the country more energy independent. Republican Members of the Select Committee will urge Congress to evaluate any new energy or climate policies on four basic principles:

Ranking Member

F. James Sensenbrenner, Jr., (Jim), a Republican Member of Congress representing the Fifth Congressional District of Wisconsin, was named the Ranking Republican of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming in March 2007. Congressman Sensenbrenner brings nearly 30 years of Congressional experience to the position, including a four-year stint as the Chairman of the House Science Committee, where he solidified his reputation as an independent leader on science and environmental issues, as well as oversight. In 1997, during his tenure as the Science Committee Chairman, Congressman Sensenbrenner led the Congressional delegation to the Kyoto climate change treaty negotiations.

Congressman Sensenbrenner was first elected a Member of Congress in November of 1978, after serving ten years in the Wisconsin State Legislature. After his term as the Science Committee Chairman ended in 2000, Congressman Sensenbrenner assumed the chairmanship of the House Committee on the Judiciary beginning in the 107th Congress. He has established a strong record on crime, constitutional, and intellectual property issues as a long-serving member of the Judiciary Committee.

Throughout his public life, Congressman Sensenbrenner has been at the forefront of efforts to eliminate wasteful government spending and protect the interests of American taxpayers. He has regularly been cited by the National Taxpayers Union as one of the most fiscally responsible House Members.
