Homeland Security Transportation Security Subcommittee to Hold Hearing on TSA's Efforts to Expedite Screening for Military Service Members

Washington, D.C. – The Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation Security, chaired by Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL), will hold a hearing entitled “Has TSA Met the Deadline to Provide Expedited Screening to Military Service Members?” tomorrow at 2 p.m. in 311 Cannon House Office Building.

Tomorrow’s hearing will examine whether the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Department of Defense (DoD) have successfully implemented the requirements outlined in P.L. 112-86, the “Risk-Based Security Screening for Members of the Armed Forces Act.”  The Act requires TSA, in consultation with the DoD, to develop and implement a plan to provide expedited security screening services for members of the armed forces by July 2.  House Homeland Security Committee member Rep. Chip Cravaack (R-MN) introduced the bill last year, and the President signed the measure into law in January.

Rogers said: "The Risk-Based Security Screening for Members of the Armed Forces Act, authored by Congressman Cravaack and signed into law by the President in January, requires TSA to implement expedited screening procedures for military service members traveling through commercial airports.  TSA was given six months to make the necessary changes to its screening procedures to better accommodate military service members.  This hearing is an opportunity to hear from TSA and the Department of Defense on what actions have been taken to meet the six-month deadline.  I applaud Congressman Cravaack for his leadership in ensuring our military heroes receive proper treatment when traveling through commercial airports.  This Act constitutes an important step not only toward giving military service members the recognition they deserve but also toward implementing a risk-based approach to aviation security overall."
