*How My Circle Shares Work*

I share a lot of circles on G+ in over 20 different topics from The Walking Dead To Bacon To Web Developers. I wanted to share my process for this so it can help you to decided if you want to add these circles when you see them or not.

1) I develop a circle from search, on a specific topic. I hand pick people who have posted about it via hashtags or keywords. I will use zombies as an example here for this post. This starter circle usually has 20 or so people in it.

2) I create a post that notifies that starter circle and says.. I am making a circle about "zombies". If you are interested in being in that circle comment here with a zombie movie you like. Or something to that effect. I start a new circle only including people who comment.

3) People will comment... usually several hundred. I will have a look at their last few posts and their about page. Each and Every Person. I realize they likely do not have zombies in their about section as an interest and that also likely,  their last 5 posts will not be about zombies.  So I make a personal judgement call based on their about, posts and response in the comments. If they are posting a ton of self promotion spam links. Not in. If they are posting about somewhat geeky themes, their comment was good, and it seems plausible that they fall into the world of possibility that they like zombies. Circled.

4) I check these circles regularly for insane "post too much" posters, people who have not posted in over a month, any type of hate posts and stuff that looks like they have nothing ever to do with that topic ever. I will remove these people.

5) I share the circle. I hope others will share it as the above process take a fair amount of time, but that is not required to stay in it or anything. Everyone wins when we form these little "fan" communities. People get added. Circle counts grow. You can find people who like stuff you do. Win Win Win. I repeat steps 2 - 4 every couple of months.. constantly adding new people and removing dead accounts.

I really want to stress that whatever circle I share will not have people posting about that topic all the time. No one except brands will post about one topic on G+ all day long but MY circles are 98% Opt-in and the people ARE interested in the topic of the circle. You will also see posts of movies they watched, pictures they shared and what they are having for dinner.  These people are not 'friends of mine' but all commented in the fashion listed above. Many are strangers or have less than 500 people circling them. I can't promise quality content from them all the time.  Edit the circles as you see fit. The process is not perfect but its helped countless people here on G+ have more eyeballs to their interests and I think Interests is what make G+ so freaking awesome.

Now you know! Each circle I share has gone through this process.. If you come across one that interests you feel free to share it or add it or check out my about section which always has updated links to all the circles I share linked there. https://plus.google.com/u/0/107982618909749811163/about

Have an awesome day G+ :)

great insight into your process. How much is too much posting. lately I have been averaging 12-18 posts per day. topics are a mix of space, movies, tv, personal views on NASA, gadgets, etc spread out thanks to Do Share by at least 30 mins between posts. is that too many posts +Amanda Blain

Editing the circles is key.  What I'll often do, also, since I already have a lot of people circled, is to go through the shared circle and pick up a couple of people that I think might be interesting.

Also, if you want notify of posts to topical circles and you  check off the "notify by email" (with permission of course), you can do so, if your "topical" circle has 100 people or less in it (if more, you can divide, i.e., I have 2 siracha circles).  I always ALERT people when creating these circles in the post, that I will notify.  Obviously, a sriracha post is probably not worth notifying for, but a HIRL post or one relating to a special project, is.

+michael interbartolo there's really only one rule to posting if you're posting public that is like you tend to do. if YOU find it interesting post it. The people that follow you or circle you can decide to tag along in an abbreviated RSS fashion or move on. But you should be posting things that you'd like to tell the "world" not tell the world what it wants and when it wants to hear... Thats my take anyways ;)
BTW by your picture and your job i never would has suspected that you're such a HUGE nerd ;)

+michael interbartolo 12-18 sounds ok. im talking about the 12-18 an hour, not limited. It will often be people spamming each song they listen to or other craziness all day every day. If they are ok posts you are fine :)

Great process. Thanks for sharing +Amanda Blain. If anyone could get me posting about zombies it would be you. Clearly I am better off in the women in tech/ social media/ geek circles...

Great write up and really the only process for putting together a circle you can confidently share. It takes time but it's worth knowing what you put into a share.

I only really do that with Google, YouTube and Adobe, for when I need to call upon those folks for help.

Yeah I should probably be better about putting together circles.. usually if I don't know where they belong I put them in the circle of people they were commenting with.. lol  Usually technology.

That's good, +Jon Emmett - organizing circles by the level of activity of the users in them, is better than by topic.

+Bobbi Jo Woods Thanks I think so, I mean I have cat farmers in web developers and technology, but hey the conversation is consistent. :)

For example, I have a circle I have people in, who post waaaaaaaay too much (yeah, I should be in it, too) and it's muted (volume slider all the way down).  When I want to see their stuff, I visit it manually.  I also have a circle of people who hangout regularly, and one for music posters.

Ive personally never done that method +Bobbi Jo Woods but i know it is popular. It seems like a lot more work to move people from one circle to the next depending on the ebbs and flows of their conversation. Id rather categorize people by their locations, interests, work etc. Then i know what they are interested in at a glance/name hover. Helps me get over that dunbar number of 150 :)

I wish we had a way to detect and manage duplicate people across circles :(  Maybe +Mohamed Mansour can get that going? I know you're busy with M$, but hehhhh

Welp. The more you use G+ and the longer you are active, the more you find yourself managing circles.  It's not a set it and forget it thing.

Wait til one of us shares you in a circle and you get popular. Muwahahahahaha

I use a hybrid of the two approaches.  I have a great many people sorted by interests and the like, but as we start to cross paths and start interacting with one another more often I will also add people to smaller, more personal circles.

Interesting. I need to organize my circles better! While I have a lot of opt-in circles myself it's a good way to structure this.
