Rehberg Fights to Preserve 6-Day Postal Mail Service

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Montana’s Congressman, Denny Rehberg, today sponsored a resolution to express the sense of the House of Representatives that the United States Postal Service (USPS) should take all appropriate measures to ensure the continuation of 6-day mail service.  This comes in direct response to an announcement yesterday by the USPS Postal Service that they have taken the first formal step in implementing 5-day collection in Fiscal Year 2011.  This would mean mail delivery to homes and businesses would be Monday through Friday.

“As long as the Post Office runs as a protected monopoly and is therefore shielded from private competition it’s my job to help ensure that customers aren’t short-changed,” said Rehberg.  “I’ve heard from many Montanans, especially those in more rural areas, who strongly object to the elimination of Saturday pickup and delivery.  Seniors who depend on the mail for delivery of medicine, and businesses that need Saturday pickup and delivery have serious concerns.”

This legislation is supported by the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, National Association of Postmasters of the United States, National Association of Letter Carriers and National Association of Postal Supervisors.

“6 day delivery is essential to the U.S. Postal Service, its employees, and especially its customers,” said George Heisler, President of the Montana State Association of Letter Carriers.  “There are other ways to fix the financial woes of the Postal Service, 5 day delivery is not one of them. HR 173 will help insure the future of the Postal Service”
