STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: Better Federal Coordination Could Lessen Challenges in the Transition from High School
Note: Students may also receive services from other federal and nongovernmental programs.
a States must identify, evaluate, and provide services to children
with disabilities. Students with disabilities remain entitled to
services until they graduate from high school with a regular high
school diploma or exceed the earlier of age 21 or the eligibility age
for a free appropriate public education under state law. While federal
law authorizes students to receive a free appropriate public education
up until age 22, eligibility for students aged 18-21 is determined by
states. 20 U.S.C. § 1412(a)(1) and 34 C.F.R. § 300.102 (2011).
b Includes job coaching, job placement, and supported employment.
c Includes vocational assessment, vocational education, and work-based
experiences.
d Students must disclose their disability to obtain services in
college.
e SSA is statutorily required to redetermine the eligibility of all
children receiving SSI benefits within one year of their 18th
birthday. 42 U.S.C. § 1382(a)(3)(H)(iii).
