WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) made the following statement upon the death of former Sen. Arlen Specter:

“I was deeply saddened at former Sen. Arlen Specter's death. His was a life and career of public service and great courage-- first as a prosecutor, then as U.S. Senator, and finally in his battle against lymphoma. He served the people of Pennsylvania, and our nation, with great commitment and devotion.

“I knew him as we worked together to pass the original Violence Against Women Act, when he bucked the tides of his party and worked across the aisle to pass that groundbreaking legislation-- no matter the political cost to himself.

“His tough, independent spirit will be an inspiration to those of us, of both parties, still doing the people's business.”
