The D.A.R.E. program, the pioneer prevention effort founded in 1983, has implemented a new middle school curriculum - 

"keepin' it Real"......MORE

 

Penn State & D.A.R.E. Partner to Prevent Substance Use in Elementary Schools

"Keepin' it REAL" is led by Penn State Dr. Michael Hecht, Distinguished Professor,

“D.A.R.E.’s recent decision to transition to the kiR elementary school curriculum was based on the abundance of evidence which has accumulated over years, that it is effective and incredibly cost efficient.”

keepin' it REAL Ranked Among Top 3 Most Cost-Effective Prevention Programs-- in a Study by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

 

An independent, federally-funded cost effectiveness study evaluating prevention programs reported that keepin' it REAL was ranked among the top 3 overall with a cost benefit of $28 in benefits for every $1 spent.

"Keepin’ it REAL" is a multicultural, school-based substance use prevention program for students 12-14 years old and taught by D.A.R.E. Officers.

KEY FINDING

Curriculum participants reported lower alcohol, marijuana, and cigarette use than students who did not receive the program.
