About Colorado: Pikes Peak Region
The name was given to the gold mining region during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush of 1858-1861. Pikes Peak, also known as "America's Mountain," remains one of the most popular attractions in the region, as the most-visited mountain in North America and second-most-visited in the world. In addition to the U.S. Olympic Committee and Training Center, the community hosts many sports-related national governing bodies, including the U.S. Tennis Association, U.S. Figure Skating and 25 other organizations. Colorado Springs also has a long, proud military tradition - the U.S. Air Force Academy, Peterson Air Force Base, Schriever Air Force Base, and Fort Carson all are located nearby. With our military members, our athletes and our community, Colorado Springs ranks as one of the "Fittest Cities" in the nation.

National Public Lands Day
Thursday, September 27, 2012Our state is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country. As a native Westerner, I’ve always been passionate about preserving our natural environment and our way of life. We as Coloradans take great pride in our wilderness, but we also must remember to take care of it. That is why this Saturday, I invite you to partake in the National Public Lands Day volunteer effort. Saturday, September 29th marks the largest single-day volunteer event for public lands in America.
