Camp Demands Answers from Army Corps of Engineers

Today, Congressman Dave Camp (R-MI) called on the Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) to explain their decision to not comply with the timeline set by the Stop the Invasive Species Act.  In the October 5 Great Lakes Mississippi River Study (GLMRIS) Interim Report the Corps stated it does not plan to complete a feasibility study focused on hydrological separation, to protect the Great Lakes from invasive species, by January 6, 2014.  Instead, the Corps plans to provide a report identifying “several alternatives” for further study.  In a letter to Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, Ms. Jo-Ellen Darcy, Camp called for:

1) Details on how the Corps concluded it is unable to complete a feasibility study by the required date;

2) Details on how the Corps concluded the product they plan to complete in December 2013 meets the law’s requirement to produce a feasibility study;

and asked:

3) Whether the Secretary of the Army, who the law holds responsible for its implementation, is committed to finishing the GLMRIS with a feasibility study that can be acted upon by Congress.
