  2. The Lower Columbia River Estuary Partnership (LCREP) has successfully leveraged federal investments to protect our river while creating hundreds of jobs. I was honored to join them tonight at their annual dinner and acknowledge how their work is benefiting commerce, recreation, and conservation on the Columbia.

  3. November is National Family Caregiver’s Month. Family members play an enormous role in providing consistent and loving care to those unable to care for themselves. As our population ages, it will become increasingly important to ensure that family caregivers have access to appropriate social and financial support networks and healthcare training. To all those currently caring for family members, thank you for everything you do.
  4. Thanks to International Paper for the informative tour of their Beaverton facility today. We learned a lot about what the company does locally with recycling and manufacturing, and we had the honor of meeting many of the hundreds of hard-working Oregonians who work there.

  5. Since 1972, Special Olympics Oregon has shown all Oregonians the true meaning of courage and good sportsmanship. I'm delighted to join Governor John Kitzhaber and other state government and industry leaders at the Governor's Gold Awards this evening to support this wonderful organization.
  6. Congratulations to ONAMI for earning a 2012 State Science and Technology Institute Excellence in Technology Based Economic Development Award. ONAMI, which includes federal, academic, and industry partners, is a signature research center dedicated to building Oregon’s capabilities in materials science and nanotechnology. The award is for ONAMI’s work in commercializing research.

  9. The University of Oregon plays a large role in supporting the growth of the technology industry around the state. Through partnerships with companies, including internship programs that provide technical training, the University helps build our economic competitiveness. It was an honor to join Congressman Peter DeFazio, U of O President Michael Gottfredson, and other representatives from government, industry, and academia at the grand opening of the Lewis Integrative Science Center, which will facilitate more collaborative research.
  10. The Intertwine is a model public-private partnership that's been an effective advocate for conservation around the metro area. Today I had the opportunity to congratulate representatives of this great organization on their continued partnership with the National Park Service and their release of a regional conservation plan.
  11. The Raphael House of Portland is an essential resource and haven for domestic violence survivors in our region. It was a privilege to join speakers with truly moving stories of survival at their luncheon today.
  12. Thanks to the Seaside High School C.Y.B.O.R.G. Seagulls for showing me their robotics lab. These students have a bright future in engineering and design and I’m looking forward to seeing their next inventions!

  13. The Clatsop Community College MERTS Campus tour this morning was great! We saw a demonstration of the Fire Response and Research Center simulator and the M/V Forerunner Training Vessel--both offer important, regionally relevant workforce training opportunities for Oregonians.

  14. Legal guardians play a critical role in caring for some of the most vulnerable among us and protecting them from scams and abuse. I was honored to welcome the National Guardianship Association to Portland today, where they are meeting to discuss best practices and policies for guardianship.
  15. My thoughts are with the family of Senator George McGovern this morning. His commitment to democracy, world peace, and addressing the issue of hunger served as an inspiration to generations of Americans.
  16. The Virginia Garcia Memorial Foundation and Health Center Cornelius Wellness Clinic is open for business! It was an honor to join the staff and other community leaders this morning for the grand opening of this center, which will preserve and promote lifelong good health for families all around the region.

  17. Congratulations to Maryalice Russell, superintendent of the McMinnville School District, who was recognized as Oregon Superintendent of the Year. The faculty, staff, and students in McMinnville, Oregon are fortunate to have her leading the district.
