Congressman Cohen Announces Over $700K for UT Heal Science Center

MEMPHIS, TN – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded two grants totaling $724,542 to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. A grant worth $374,792 will be used for research into the metabolism and function of vitamin D in the cornea, distributed by the National Eye Institute. A second grant worth $349,750 will be used for research into the role of eicosanoids in vascular wall remodeling, and will be distributed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center is one of the original pillars of Memphis’ emerging biomedical research industry,” Congressman Cohen said. “Aided by federal funds, the UTHSC is able to help us better understand the human body and its functions.

The National Eye Institute was established in 1968 as the first governmental organization dedicated solely to understanding human visual diseases and disorders. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute was established to promote the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary diseases.  Both centers are part of the National Institutes of Health, which is an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
