Around the Water Cooler

Utah explores extending Medicaid to inmates

Inmates have traditionally been barred from the state-federal health insurance program, which caters to the poor and disabled. Currently, the Department of Corrections contracts directly with the University of Utah’s hospital and clinics for procedures that cannot be handled at the prison infirmary, and the state picks up the tab.

Opposition growing to Obama jobs plan

Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia questioned the level and effectiveness of spending. Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia opposed raising income taxes on upper-income Americans to pay for it, while Sens. Mark Begich of Alaska and Mary Landrieu of Louisiana said taxing oil and gas companies was unfair.

A Look Ahead

Next week, Senator Lee will head the Republican side of an Antitrust Hearing on the business practices of Google, featuring the company’s CEO Eric Schmidt.
