Connolly to Join Reston Cyclists for Greater Washington Bike to Work Day

Congressman Connolly will join more than 100 bicyclists Friday morning at the Reston Town Center to support the Greater Washington Bike to Work Day.  The National Capital area will be host to more than 50 bicyclist pit stops, including one of the busier stops in Reston.  Last year, more than 400 riders visited the Reston stop.

Dating back to his tenure on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Congressman Connolly has been a strong advocate of bicycling as a source of exercise, enjoyment, and a critical transportation option in our region.  As Chairman of the Fairfax Board, one of Connolly’s proudest achievements was completing the Cross County trail, a 40-mile walking and biking route across the county.  Connolly also hired the first Fairfax County Bike Coordinator, created a county-wide bike map, installed bike racks on all county buses, and drafted a bike master plan for infrastructure improvement, among other initiatives.

In Congress, Connolly has fought Republican efforts to eliminate funding for bike and pedestrian infrastructure, and has worked with the regional delegation to secure Department of Transportation funds to implement bike improvements throughout the region, including an increase in the number and location of Capital BikeShare stations.

“I hope today’s events encourage prospective new riders to rethink the way they commute,” said Connolly.  “Biking to work is a great way to commute and more Northern Virginians, including members of my staff, are using this healthy and efficient option.  It is not only a healthy, cost effective mode of transportation, but it also allows you to avoid the hassle of Northern Virginia’s traffic congestion.”

Cyclists who attend the event at the Town Center Pavilion will be treated to a free breakfast as well as raffles for bike-related prizes.  Mechanics will also be on hand to check over bikes and answer any bike related questions.
