CONGRESSMAN DAN BURTON INTRODUCES THE “NO SANCTUARY FOR ILLEGALS ACT”

(Washington, D.C.) – Congressman Dan Burton [R-IN-05] announced today that he has introduced legislation targeting so-called “Sanctuary Cities” that accommodate illegal immigrants. The bill, known as the “No Sanctuary for Illegals Act”, would prohibit Federal funds from going to any State or other local government that the Secretary of Homeland Security determines is interfering with efforts to enforce Federal immigration laws.

Said Burton, “This bill is designed to stop American tax dollars from going to States and cities and their officials that have no respect for our country’s laws. These State and local governments are awarding illegal behavior and passing huge public costs on to the American people. Illegal immigration threatens our National security and we must secure our borders now.”

If a State or political subdivision is denied Federal funding under this bill, the funding can resume when the Secretary of Homeland Security certifies that the government has entered into an agreement with the Secretary to cease all such interference.

Concluded Burton, “All elected officials, regardless of where they serve, are bound by the law of the United States. They can’t pick and choose what laws they will abide by and enforce. Our laws are the glue that holds our country together and we should encourage all Americans, especially our elected officials, to adhere to them. This is a fair bill and I hope it will come to the House floor for a full vote very soon.”
