Colonel Thomas H. Roe

Colonel Thomas H. Roe assumed the position of Director, Center for Army Lessons Learned in January 2011.

Colonel Thomas H. Roe was commissioned through Officer Candidate School as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry in 1986. He has served in a variety of Command and Staff assignments in both Light and Mechanized Infantry units.

Colonel Roe's first assignment was with the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized), Schweinfurt, West Germany, where he served as a rifle platoon leader and scout platoon leader. His next troop assignment was with the 6th Infantry Division (Light) at Ft. Wainwright, Alaska where he commanded Company A, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment. He was then assigned to the Joint Readiness Training Center where he served as an observer/controller and then commanded Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

Subsequent assignments include duty as a division chief and instructor at the United States Air Force Academy. Colonel Roe next served as the executive officer for 2nd Battalion, 9th Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division in the Republic of Korea. He was then assigned to Special Operations Command, Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, Virginia as an operations and plans officer. He next performed duties as a tactics instructor and author at the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.

In 2004, Colonel Roe assumed command of the newly activated 1st Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) at Ft. Myers, Virginia. He was then assigned as the Chief of Plans forward for Central Command and the J3 for the United States Military Training Mission in Saudi Arabia. Deploying to Iraq in 2009, he served as the United States Forces-Iraq Assistant Chief of Staff for Transition. Colonel Roe then returned to be the Director of the Mission Command Battle Laboratory at Ft. Leavenworth. After a short tour again in Iraq leading a Planning Team, he returned to his current assignment.

Colonel Roe is a graduate of the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Army Command and General Staff College, the Joint Forces Staff College, and the Advanced Operational Art Studies Fellowship, a Senior Service College fellowship. He received his Juris Doctorate from Baylor University School of Law and is an active member of the Texas State Bar Association.

Colonel Roe's awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Joint Force Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Expert Infantryman's Badge, Parachutist badge, Air Assault badge, and Ranger tab.
