9/11 MOMENT OF REMEMBRANCE RESOLUTION APPROVED BY SENATE

Cochran &Wicker Cosponsor Measure in Advance of 10th Anniversary of Terrorist Attacks

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Senate has approved a resolution cosponsored by U.S. Senators Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) that calls on all Americans to take time on Sept. 11 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the United States.

The 9/11 Moment of Remembrance Resolution (S.Res.237) was approved by unanimous consent on Friday.  The measure calls for a one-minute “moment of remembrance” at 1 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011.  It also recognizes the victims of the attacks and expresses deep condolences for the lives lost at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pa.

“I think it is worthwhile for us, as a nation, to take a moment to remember those horrible attacks, the lives lost, the bravery of those working to protect us, and our national resolve to protect the fundamental freedoms and rights that make the United States great,” said Cochran, who is cochairman with Senator Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) of the Congressional Advisory Board for the 10th Anniversary of 9/11.

“On September 11, 2001, America experienced a dark day in our history, but we remained strong,” said Wicker.  “We should commemorate those who died and remember the incredible work of those who responded to their neighbors’ need almost ten years ago.”

Among other things, the resolution also notes the ramifications of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and “reaffirms that the people of the United States will never forget the challenges our country endured on and since September 11, 2001, and will work tirelessly to defeat those who attacked the United States.”

The resolution also honors the work and sacrifices of Americans dedicated to protecting the country.  The measure states that the nation “recognizes the valiant service, actions, and sacrifices of United States personnel, including members of the Unites States Armed Forces, the United States intelligence agencies, the United States diplomatic service, homeland security and law enforcement personnel, and their families, who have given so much, including their lives and well-being, to support the cause of freedom and defend the security of the United States.”
