My shooting range proposal

Posted: Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Dear Fellow Coloradan,

Last week in the U.S. Senatemy colleagues came together to consider the Sportsmen’s Act.  This bipartisan legislation includes my proposal, the Target Practice and Marksmanship Training Support Act, which would free up more of the proceeds the federal government collects on sporting equipment and ammunition to expand access to public shooting ranges, all without raising taxes or increasing spending.

My proposal simply eases some restrictions on the use of Pittman-Robertson funds — fees collected on sporting equipment and ammunition —  allowing them to be used more effectively for the establishment and maintenance of public shooting ranges.

Now more than ever, hunters and sportsmen are losing access to safe, well-managed areas where they can responsibly practice their sport. My proposal will help reverse this trend by creating safe, high-quality areas to shoot.  It promises to be one of the first proposals taken up when the U.S. Senate reconvenes in November.

Earlier this year, more than 5,500 Coloradans wrote to me in support of responsibly expanding access to public shooting ranges.  You have been with me throughout the process; now let's make the final push to get this bill passed.

Please share your personal stories with your community by writing to your local newspaper about how much you support our hunters, sportsmen and this important piece of legislation.

Warm regards,

Mark Udall
