December 2007 Employment Situation
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that payroll employment increased by 18,000 jobs, or 0.01 percent, during December 2007 to a seasonally adjusted total employment level of 138.495 million. There have been 52 consecutive months of positive payroll job growth. During that time 8.677 million jobs have been created --- an average of 166,865 per month. In the 24 months prior to the current streak, payroll employment decreased by an average of 81,583 jobs per month. Over the past year, payroll employment has increased by 1.328 million jobs. BLS reported that the unemployment rate increased in December 2007 to 5 percent from 4.7 percent in November 2007. One year earlier (December 2006) the unemployment rate stood at 4.4 percent.
