Mobile Aerosol Monitoring System for Department of Defense

The proposed array of instrumentation for improving our understanding of the temporal
variability of physical and chemical properties of dust will include (a) a continuous analyzer for measuring metals; (b) continuous mass monitors; (c) an instrument for measurement of light absorption; (d) an instrument to measure light scattering; (e) optical particle size analyzer, (f) laser radar for remote sensing of dust; (g) continuous gas monitors for ozone, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide; (h) time-integrated filter samplers; and (i) meteorological instruments. We plan to install all equipment in an instrumented mobile shelter for easy shipment and transport to monitoring sites. In the third year, the system will be transported to and operated, in collaboration with the DoD, at a military base in the Middle East or elsewhere.
Results will be available through a secure internet connection for DoD to evaluate, integrate into their planning, and for making operational decisions.

By leveraging multiple approved synergistic technologies and available multi-departmental expertise NVCI seeks to study and advance the practice of lung cancer screening for high-risk individuals. This will provide state-of-the-art resources and medical opinions to NVCI's patients in keeping with the mission of excellence in military medicine. By developing a multi-disciplinary pathway for patient evaluation the program would be poised to be inclusive of patients from multiple referral sources throughout the military, DOD civilian, retiree, and dependant communities. This study is designed to collaborate with the Interventional Pulmonary and Medical Oncology Service of the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, MD. Also, by providing multiple additional services at the NVCI to the VA and DOD/Tricare population, NVCI aims to reduce the overall cost by eliminating need for multiple Tricare referrals and appointments. Additionally, NVCI would capture additional patients felt to be at risk, as well as,
attendant spin-off requirements (CT, Pathology, Laboratory testing, PFT's) thereby reducing overall cost to the system.

Clark County currently has few resources for children and families overwhelmed with caring for a behaviorally challenging child. High numbers of uninsured children present significant barriers to accessing essential services for special needs children. Data from Families USA 2008 indicates that in Clark County, nearly 16 percent of children under age 17 are without health insurance.
