Internship Opportunities

Internships are a great opportunity to learn about the workings of a fast-paced congressional office.  Our offices offer internships in both our Oakland District office and in our Washington, D.C. office.

Our office expects interns to commit a minimum of three (3) months and to work a minimum of eight (8) hours per week in our Oakland Office and twenty-four (24) hours per week in our D.C. office. Both offices may be able to accomodate a departure from these standards if you are scheduled with a separate internship program.

Qualifications
Ideal candidates will possess excellent oral and written communication skills and conduct themselves in a professional manner.

Duties
Oakland Office: Internship responsibilities in our Oakland District Office include a mixture of administrative support, constituent services, and community outreach duties. Interns are expected to assist staff with the daily responsibilities including but not limited to: answering phones, sorting mail and data entry. Interns also provide support to staff by researching constituent requests involving federal agencies, and a host of other duties.  Internships are divided into semesters -- spring, summer and fall.

DC Office: Internship responsibilities in our DC office include a mixture of both administrative and legislative duties. Interns are expected to assist the staff assistant with the daily responsibilities including but not limited to: answering phones, sorting mail and data entry. Interns will also provide support to the legislative staff by performing research and writing public statements, assisting with constituent requests, working with other congressional offices, and a host of other duties.  Internships are divided into semesters -- spring, summer and fall. If interested, please apply well in advance of your intended semester.

Application Process
Send a cover letter and resume to the office in which you are interested in interning. The cover letter is used as a writing sample, and should include the dates of your availability, and an explanation of your interest in interning for Congresswoman Barbara Lee. In addition, be prepared to submit references. NOTE: Prospective candidates should send a complete application packet to the office to be fully considered for an internship position. A complete packet includes: cover letter (including dates of availability and proposed start and end date), resume, writing sample to consist of no more than 3 pages, and our completed application form.  You may mail or email the application packet to the addresses listed below.
