    Super Bowl Sunday, 2010, was just the kind of day on which we might have let our guard down. At 11:17 a.m. a violent explosion, audible 30 miles away, tore apart the Kleen Energy Systems power plant in Middletown.

    An army of rescue teams, law enforcement officers and investigators from local, state, out-of-state and federal agencies rushed to the plant in a well-coordinated response. The fire quickly was brought under control, victims taken to hospitals and an initial determination was made that the explosion was an accident and not a terrorist attack.

    That quick, comprehensive and effective response would not have occurred before Sept. 11, 2001.     As Joe Lieberman winds down his two-decade career in the Senate, the onetime Democratic vice presidential nominee is reaching out to an unlikely group to help seal his political legacy: freshman Republicans.

    Behind the scenes and in front of the cameras, the retiring foreign policy hawk is grooming, mentoring and partnering with a handful of GOP freshmen to ensure that, long after he’s left the Senate, his vision for America’s role abroad survives.

    Reaching across the aisle is nothing new for Lieberman, who stood on the stage at the 2008 Republican National Convention and endorsed John McCain, making his choice of mentees — including Sens. Kelly Ayotte, Mark Kirk and Marco Rubio — a fresh reminder of how the former Democratic stalwart managed to find himself a near pariah among liberals.

Senators Introduce Revised Cybersecurity Legislation, S.3414

The five co-sponsors of bipartisan cybersecurity legislation introduced new, revised legislation July 19, 2012; to protect our national security, economic security, and life-sustaining services from increasingly commonplace cyber-attacks.

The co-sponsors - Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., Ranking Member Susan Collins, R-Maine, Commerce Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., Select Intelligence Committee Chairman Dianne Feinstein, D-Ca., and Federal Financial Management Subcommittee Chairman Tom Carper, D-Del. – offered the revised Cybersecurity Act of 2012 in a good faith effort to secure enough votes to address the immediate threat of attack from foreign nations, hacktivists, criminals, and terrorists against the nation’s most critical cyber systems.
