47TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT

Washington, DC – Today, Chairman Charlie Gonzalez (TX-20) released the following statement to mark the 47th Anniversary of the Voting Right Act.

This week, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law in 1965. Today, many voters are still disenfranchised by unnecessary state-wide voter ID laws. Democrats in the House have developed a new interactive voting rights app that offers state-specific data for all 50 states and six U.S. territories, and includes information on voter registration, new voting requirements and early voting. You can check it out here.

The Voting Rights Act restored justice, equality, and fairness to our country’s most sacred right: the right to vote. At a time when we have witnessed unprecedented attacks on the right to vote, now more than ever is a time to not only celebrate the anniversary of this historic legislation, but we must also fight to maintain its legacy and integrity.”
