Purpose of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition
- Advance policies that promote clean energy technology innovation and domestic manufacturing, develop renewable energy resources, and create green collar jobs throughout the product supply-chain.
- Advance polices to help arrest global warming and protect our nation’s clean air, water and natural environment.
The House of Representatives Sustainable Energy & Environment Coalition (SEEC) was founded in January 2009, at the start of the 111th Congress, to be a focused, active, and effective advocate for policies for clean energy innovation and job creation, environmental protection, and policies that will address global climate change. Founded by co-chairs Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) and Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY), with thirty-five charter members, SEEC has over its three-year existence grown to fifty one members, and has established itself as a key green voice in the Congress.
SEEC has won important victories to promote clean energy and protect the environment. During its first two years of existence - during the 111th Congress - SEEC was integral in shaping the historic investments and incentives for renewable energy and energy efficiency contained in the 2009 Recovery Act, and helped to pass the first ever climate and energy legislation in the House, in 2009. SEEC also worked to pass legislation to respond to the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster, support domestic energy innovation, and create American jobs in domestic clean energy industries and repairing our nation's infrastructure.
In the 112th Congress, SEEC has continued its fight to create American clean energy jobs, reduce U.S. oil dependence, and to protect American public health and our nation's precious natural resources. SEEC has fought successfully to uphold the Clean Air Act, continue vital federal conservation efforts, and to protect investments in a competitive American clean energy economy. In 2012, SEEC members remain dedicated to the coalition's mission and to advancing policies for a more prosperous, sustainable, and secure future for America.
