Afghanistan
I supported the use of force in Afghanistan as a necessary and justified reaction to the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. I have advocated vigorous oversight of the war effort, including committee investigations into the treatment of Iraq and Afghanistan detainees and into the use of private security contractors in Afghanistan.
I support President Obama’s decision to focus on the transition of security responsibility to Afghanistan’s security forces, a decision that includes bringing home 10,000 U.S. troops by the end of 2011, and the remaining 23,000 U.S. surge forces by September of 2012. The President’s decision keeps the pressure on Afghan leaders to assume more and more responsibility for their security, just as the establishment of a date to begin reductions had the effect of creating a sense of urgency on the part of the Afghan government to take responsibility for Afghanistan’s security.

In a statement, Sen.
