John Gallagher manages the Operations division, which oversees the U.S. Botanic Garden's facilities, including computerized environmental control systems, compliance with safety and OSHA standards, vehicle fleet and facilities maintenance and improvement projects. His division is responsible for attending to the needs of people and plants by keeping the Garden facilities in good condition and running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. As part of the Architect of the Capitol's Energy Management Working Group, he also implements energy reduction measures at the Garden.

One of the U.S. Botanic Garden's longest-serving employees, John first joined the staff in 1977 as a pipefitter/plumber after serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. In the years since, he has completed varied assignments from maintenance to building renovations and project management. John is a Certified Facility Manager by the International Facility Management Association and a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He received a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Engineering Science from The Johns Hopkins University.
