Mica Announces Assistance For Firefighters

FEDERAL GRANT WILL FOR SOUTHWEST VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Congressman John L. Mica (R-Putnam) today announced that the Southwest Volunteer Fire Department in Palatka will receive a federal grant of $52,530 to improve its operational capabilities as a first responder. The funds will be provided under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.
"The Federal Government recognizes the critical role of our community’s firefighters," Rep. Mica stated. "This grant will provide significant assistance and resources to Palatka’s Fire Department as they serve our community during times of need."
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant program is administered by the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), which is part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Funds are used by America’s fire departments to purchase equipment, improve emergency medical programs and increase the effectiveness of firefighting operations. FEMA recently became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
"I am pleased that some of our taxpayers’ funds will come back to the community of Palatka to help provide vital first responder services such as emergency assistance and medical care," said Rep. Mica.
