Federal Support For Bethune-Cookman College

$250,000 for School of Nursing Enhancement Project

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Congressman John L. Mica (R-7th District) today announced that initial approval has been granted for $250,000 in federal support for the Bethune-Cookman College School of Nursing Enhancement Project in Daytona Beach. The federal assistance is included in a budget measure passed by the House of Representatives last evening.

“I am pleased that the Congress recognizes the work of Bethune-Cookman to provide education and training for this vital program,” said Rep. Mica. “The nursing industry is important to our health care industry, and with a nation-wide shortage of nurses, we should do everything possible to attract and recruit young people to enter this profession.”

Bethune-Cookman College is an Historically Black College and University institution that is working to rehabilitate and renovate its School of Nursing. The College is committed to providing a $5.6 million to match federal funding.

Yesterday’s action is part of Congress’s work to complete the appropriations bills that provide the operating budgets for the agencies and departments of the Federal Government. The House passed the Fiscal Year 2007 Transportation-Treasury-HUD Appropriations bill, which includes the transportation funding, by a vote of 406-22.

The measure must also be approved by the Senate and signed into law by the President.
