FEDERAL FUNDS FOR ORLANDO SANFORD AIRPORT

Mica Announces Funds For Noise Migration

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Congressman John L. Mica (R-Winter Park), Chairman of the House Aviation Subcommittee, today announced that the Orlando Sanford Airport will receive $4,275,000 to help with noise mitigation. The federal grant funds are being provided through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP).

"This federal assistance will enable Sanford Airport to acquire surrounding land that will serve as a noise buffer," Mica said. "Our community will benefit from reduced levels of aircraft noise and an increased quality of life while the airport continues to serve as an important economic and transportation hub."

AIP grants come from the Aviation Trust Fund, which is funded by the collection of an airplane ticket tax and related user fees. Congress passed legislation in 2000 to ensure that the Aviation Trust Fund is invested back into airport runways, facilities and construction, rather than spent on other government programs.

Mica was also able to help the airport secure federal aid for an Instrument Landing System (ILS), which allows incoming aircraft to use a landing flight path while maintaining higher altitudes. The ILS became fully functional in December of 2000 and serves as an important component of the airport’s noise reduction efforts.

"We’re delighted to proceed with noise mitigation to help ensure the Airport is a good neighbor as we expand our services," stated Larry Dale, President and CEO of Orlando Sanford Airport.
