Embry-Riddle Aviation Initiative To Receive Federal Funds

Mica Secures Funds Allowing Florida to Participate in NASA Program
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. John L. Mica (R-Winter Park) announced today that Congress has approved funding that will enable Embry-Riddle to participate in NASA’s Small Air Transport System (SATS). Funds are included in a NASA spending measure passed by both the House and Senate yesterday.
"Embry Riddle’s participation in the SATS program will provide a major source of economic growth and business opportunities in Central Florida," Mica stated. "Congress recognizes that this initiative could be a catalyst for educational, research and technological opportunities that will benefit our nation."
NASA is administering the SATS program to develop a new aviation system for the traveling public. By modernizing the national air traffic system, currently based on decades-old technology, and by expanding the use of smaller and medium sized airports, the SATS program would create a national aviation commuter system similar to the current national highway system. Travelers would be a able to safely operate and fly a SATS vehicle to their destinations similar to driving a car.
Working with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and NASA, Mica was able to secure $9 million to begin the SATS program, which is anticipated to last five years. With this expanded funding, NASA has stated it intends to name Florida and Virginia as demonstration states for the SATS. Embry-Riddle has been leading a public and private sector effort to secure the Florida designation.
Mica continued, "SATS could dramatically improve our aviation system for the traveling public for the 21st century, and much of the necessary research will be performed by Embry-Riddle and its partners. This work will enhance Florida’s position as a leader in aviation and aerospace technologies."
Funding for NASA programs are included in the Fiscal Year 2001 VA-HUD Appropriations Bill which passed both bodies of Congress yesterday and is expected to be signed into law by the President.
