Members of the National Museum of African Art are key financial supporters to our educational and outreach efforts. They are also part of our family and enjoy special events and access at the museum. Recently, we visited Baltimore to take in African art exhibitions (pictured above). Our February 2013 members visit to New York City includes a stop at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, lunch at Red Rooster, and an afternoon at the Studio Museum in Harlem. Tickets available in January.

We appreciate the support of our members and look forward to welcoming new members to our family. To join, visit our membership page.

The National Museum of African Art Welcomes Africa's Heads of State to the Ford Foundation, New York

On September 27, 2012 Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole and Mr. Luis Ubinas welcomed President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia and members of the African diplomatic corps to a reception at the Ford Foundation in honor of the kickoff of the 67th United Nations General Assembly. Cole, Director of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art (NMAfA) and Ubinas, President of the Ford Foundation, collaborated with the Department of State to host the gala affair which celebrated the accomplishments of African heads of State and featured remarks from Valerie Amos, the United Nations Under- Secretary for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordination; Ambassador Jean Ping, former Chair of the African Union, and Johnnie Carson, The Department of State's Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of African Affairs.

The evening's guests included CNN's Isha Sesay and Nduka. Obaigbena, owner of ThisDAY Live. NMAfA chair Stu Bohart, Vice Chair Lucia Riddle and board members Christine Warnke, Asif Shaik, Gwendolyn Mikell and Maggie Obaji Johnson also attended.

The event was made possible through the kind support of Chevron, Exxon Mobil, Jack Edlow and Toni Ritzenberg.

Deputy director and chief curator, Christine Mullen Kreamer discusses the newest exhibit at the National Museum of African Art on PBS NEWSHOUR with correspondent Hari Sreenivasan.
