  • SANDRA LEE AND JOHN GALLINA NAMED 'JOE'S HEROES'

    10.15.12 at 3:32 PM

Hartford CourantBy Jesse Leavenworth MANCHESTER — Sandra Lee, a U.S. Army veteran who endured four bomb attacks in Iraq, did not speak Monday at a ceremony honoring her service. Instead, Lee sang "America the Beautiful," which celebrates the nation's beauty, expanse and plenty and ends with a prayer for brotherhood. At the cermony at Manchester Community College, U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman presented a plaque to Lee, naming her one of "Joe's Heroes." Lieberman started the program to recognize Connecticut people who go above and beyond to help their neighbors. He recounted Lee's experiences in Iraq, where she survived four improvised explosive device attacks, and spoke of her "tremendous capacity" to recover from traumatic brain injury and post traumatic stress syndrome _ "which is," Lieberman said, "the best of America." "You can knock us down, but you can't keep us down," he said. "We'll fight our way back, as she has, to rebuild her life, to sing and fill other people's ... Read More »

Connecticut Post   By Maggie Gordon STAMFORD -- Stamford native Sen. Joe Lieberman returned to his hometown Wednesday morning to bestow a Joe's Hero award upon Curt Welling, the CEO of AmeriCares, the global health and disaster-relief organization headquartered on Hamilton Avenue. Lieberman said Wednesday morning he has doled out 50 to 75 of the awards throughout his senatorial career, which he will wrap up in January, after serving 24 years. He said Welling and AmeriCares express the best that America has to offer the world at large. "There are a lot of heroes in this state that don't receive recognition as heroes. They're just in their own quiet way doing extraordinarily good work in a whole host of ways," he said in the nonprofit's board room, surrounded by dozens of AmeriCares employees. "I have found myself in the last several months, as I see the end of this chapter of my life approaching, giving this award more frequently, as an expression of gratitude a... Read More »

Senator Joe Lieberman bestowed Amy Guerrieri, head of Old Greenwich-based nonprofit Rockin' Mom Appalachian Project (RAMP), with a “Joe’s Hero” award during a media event held Friday at RAMP's headquarters at 187 Sound Beach Avenue.

Guerrieri — who along with her husband Robert runs Upper Crust Bagels in Old Greenwich and recently launched a line of healthy juice drinks for children called Rockin' Waters — founded RAMP three years ago after she learned through an ABC 20/20 special called "A Hidden America" that millions of children were going to bed hungr...
