Rigell Votes To Protect the Chesapeake Bay
Washington, D.C. – Citing concerns about the bill’s potential impact on efforts to preserve and restore the Chesapeake Bay, today Congressman Scott Rigell (VA-2) voted against H.R. 3409, the Stop the War on Coal Act, a compilation bill that included four pieces of energy legislation that the House had already voted on. Three of those bills Rigell had previously voted for; one of the bills he had voted against.
“I am in full support of sound legislation that advances an all-of-the-above energy strategy and leverages the complete set of resources right here in America in an environmentally-responsible way,” Rigell said. “I voted against today’s bill because I share the concerns that some experts have raised that one of the embedded parts of the bill could prevent the progress I am committed to seeing in preserving and protecting the Chesapeake Bay.”
Rigell had already voted in favor of three of those bills because each one advances, in an environmentally-responsible way, an all-of-the-above energy strategy. However, Rigell had voted against H.R. 2018, which would eliminate the role of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Bay restoration and clean up.
Rigell continued: “We have a moral obligation to leave our children and grandchildren with clean air, water, and soil. We must also leave them with a country that is energy independent, enjoys a robust economy, and is debt-free. These ideals are not mutually exclusive, and I am committed to pursuing legislation that ensures we achieve all of these goals.”
