Sensenbrenner Urges Senate to Restore Yucca Mountain Funds to Spending Bill

Sensenbrenner: ‘A project of this importance shouldn’t be subjected to back-door efforts to kill it.’

Washington, D.C.– U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., ranking Republican on the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, made the following statement today on the release of 1,924-page Senate appropriations legislation that eliminates funding for the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository:

“Senate Majority Leader Reid should not use a vital appropriations bill to kill the crucial Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository. Congress chose Yucca Mountain as the site for a critically-needed waste storage facility, and taxpayers have invested $10 billion and 30 years of research into its development. A project of this importance shouldn’t be subjected to back-door efforts to kill it. This funding should be restored immediately.”
