Washington, DC – Congressman Howard L. Berman, top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee made the following statement on Secretary Clinton’s announcement to designate the Haqqani Network as a Foreign Terrorist Organization:
“I commend the decision today to designate the Haqqani Network as a Foreign Terrorist Organization,” said Rep. Berman. “Haqqani suicide attackers are responsible for the deaths of many American soldiers and have for years undermined NATO efforts in Afghanistan from their safe havens in Pakistan.
“Secretary Clinton’s announcement demonstrates the Administration’s readiness to use all the tools available –military and diplomatic-- to end the war in Afghanistan and disrupt threats that destabilize the entire region. This designation will help choke the Haqqani Network’s funding pipelines and send a strong signal of the Administration’s resolve to defeat al-Qaeda and stabilize Afghanistan.”
