How Senator Hagan's Office Can Help
With Federal Agencies

Constituent Services:
Frequently Asked Questions

What types of services can Senator Hagan’s office provide?

Senator Hagan’s office is able to assist North Carolinians who are having difficulties with federal agencies including the Social Security Administration, the Veterans Administration, IRS, federally regulated banking institutions, and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) or State Department for visa, immigration and passport issues.

What services are we unable to provide?

Senator Hagan’s office is not able to offer legal advice or intercede in any judicial matters.  For example, Hagan’s staff is unable to assist in custody and child support disputes.  North Carolinians who are seeking assistance with a legal matter can contact the North Carolina Bar Association or Legal Aid of North Carolina.

If you need assistance with an issue involving a state matter, such as Medicaid benefits or Food and Nutrition Services, please contact the Governor’s office. You may also wish to contact your NC State Representative or Senator. For more information, please click here.

What type of assistance can we provide with the VA?

Hagan's staff can contact the VA on behalf of North Carolina veterans to track down the status of existing benefit claims.  In most cases, claims cannot be expedited in front of other existing and pending claims.   Hagan’s office can verify if a claim is processing correctly, and also determine if the VA is awaiting further documentation. We can then work with you to ensure the VA receives the proper documentation.

As your United States Senator, my staff and I are responsible for helping North Carolinians navigate the complex federal bureacracy. Our "constituent services" take many forms—we help resolve issues with agencies such as the VA and IRS, facilitate the passport process, nominate our state’s best and brightest students to our nation’s service academies, offer my support for federal grant applications, and assist those affected by natural disasters such as Hurricane Irene. Often times, we are contacted by people who have run into endless amounts of red tape and seen every door imaginable slammed in their face.

I want constituent service to be a hallmark of my office, and I have a top-notch team in North Carolina dedicated to assisting you. In the past three years, they have helped countless North Carolina veterans process their claims with the VA, contacted banks and their regulators to bring down unreasonable mortgage rates for North Carolina home owners, and expedited overseas adoptions for North Carolina families—just to name a few of their successes.

Please never hesitate to contact my office if you are in need of assistance.  For more information on how I can help, please visit my constituent services website or call my Greensboro office toll-free at (877) 852-9462.

Sincerely,

Success Story from Hagan’s
Constituent Services Team

Did You Know?

You now have until April 17 to file your taxes. Click here for a list of low income taxpayer clinics in North Carolina.

A constituent recently contacted Hagan’s office because the IRS was not processing an adoption tax credit she was due. For several months, the IRS continued to send her letters stating that the return was being reviewed, but no action was taken. The constituent was also told more than once by the IRS that it did not have all of her documentation, despite the fact that she had sent it to the agency on multiple occasions. A constituent services representative in Hagan’s office sent the woman’s case to the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service, where it was assigned a case advocate. In less than six weeks, her return was processed, and she received a tax credit of more than $14,000.
