Today, Rep. Steve Israel (D – Huntington) called on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to appoint a Federal Insurance Oversight Monitor to ensure that consumers are not being taken advantage of in states impacted by Hurricane Sandy. The CFPB serves as the federal watchdog for consumer financial products and services.

“We are facing a gas crisis on Long Island,” Israel said.  “State and federal officials have made progress on re-opening the ports to improve supply but 70 percent of gas stations still lack power. In addition to ensuring power is restored, I am calling on New York State and FEMA to get generators delivered immediately to gas stations that have gas but no power, so we can get the gas pumping again. I also applaud IBEW and NECA members for offering their valuable services to then get these generators up and running.”

Today, Congressman Steve Israel (D-Huntington) called on FEMA to provide “Cell-on-Wheels” (“COWs”) trucks as well as “cell on light trucks” (“COLTs”) to provide additional cell service to Long Islanders as they continue to face widespread power outages. Most home phones on Long Island are not working, either due to power outages or landlines that were downed along with power lines.  Cell phones are the sole means of communication for many households on Long Island.
