NALGEP Web Cast on Low Impact Development and Watershed Management
Date(s): March 21, 2007
Location: NALGEP Offices Washington, DC United States
Cost: Members: Free / Non Members: $30
Description:
In the face of rapid development, local governments are working hard to create and implement watershed protection programs at the municipal and multi-jurisdictional level. Low impact development (LID) strategies have become an innovative approach to minimizing stormwater runoff. LID strategies work to mimic predevelopment hydrology by using techniques that filter, store, and detain runoff close to water bodies, including open space conservation, buffers and green roofs. LID promotes cost effective implementation measures that deal with stormwater not only on a small scale but on a watershed basis as well. These projects are equally viable for new development, building retrofits, and redevelopment and revitalization

On Wednesday, March 21, from 3:00-4:45 PM EST NALGEP featured Prince George's County, Maryland and Alachua County, Florida's low impact development implementation strategies and stormwater management initiatives. The web cast highlighted ways in which these counties implement strategies on a county and regional watershed scale. The presentations included topics such as: land use and sustainable development ordinances; integrated management practices, such as landscape design; monitoring techniques; and, pollution prevention outreach. Participants were given time to interact with presenters and other local government professionals.
