Inclement Weather

Be prepared! Now is the time of year where the weather changes from day to day. If BT needs to make changes to our service because of the weather we will update our website first then post messages through the local media.

On occasion some routes are detoured and in some instances service is delayed or cancelled completely. During times of inclement weather be prepared and allow extra time for travel as delays should be expected. We urge all passengers to consider their safety before venturing out into inclement weather.

Service Levels

Blacksburg Transit has three types of service levels: Full, Reduced and Hybrid-Reduced. The definitions and uses of each can be found below:

  • Full service - Full Service typically operates during Fall and Spring semesters; ALL routes are in operation with multiple buses operating on each route with most routes operating every 10-15 minutes; Trippers are also utilized when needed.
  • Reduced Service - Reduced Service typically operates during all times outside of Fall and Spring semesters, e.g. during Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall breaks. Some routes such as the Hokie Express do not operate; others such as Hethwood/Harding and UCB/Progress are combined; service is generally every 30 - 60 minutes.
  • Hybrid-Reduced - This is not a regularly scheduled service level, so does not appear on the service calendar. During Hybrid-Reduced service every route will operate on 30 minute frequency, excluding the Two Town Trolley which will remain on hourly service. No routes will be combined. Hours of service may be shortened or extended as needed. Examples of possible use: Saturday Exams Spring semester, inclement weather.
