Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy made landfall in southern New Jersey near Atlantic City at 8:00PM last night and is currently traveling westward through southern Pennsylvania. Sandy is expected to turn to the north and weaken steadily over the next few days as it passes through Pennsylvania, New York, and Canada, and dissipate entirely by the weekend. Throughout the day today, Massachusetts may continue to experience rain, damaging winds, associated widespread power outages and freshwater and coastal flooding.

Special Note about Hurricane Sandy and Shelter Services

Local government has an obligation under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, along with other civil rights laws, to ensure that people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to emergency shelters. Emergency shelters must be accessible and allow individuals the right to remain united with their service animals. EOHHS is working closely with MEMA to ensure that individuals with disabilities have access to emergency shelter should they require it.
