On September 2, 2010, the Dorn VA Medical Center hosted "An Evening for Heroes" dinner event at the 7Grill in Columbia, SC.

The dinner event was part of a new initiative called, "The Buddy Program" sponsored by the Dorn VAMC. The Buddy Program is a voluntary program whose goal is to offer additional support to Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) combat Veterans and their families. The program solicits assistance from established Veterans organizations whereas combat Veterans from those organizations will reach out to our current OEF/OIF combat Veterans offering individual support and encouragement as they transition back into civilian life. An Evening for Heroes dinner provided free meals to OEF/OIF Veterans and their family members in a relaxed environment. It was also an opportunity for Vets to meet and share their experiences with other Veterans while being entertained by the Fort Jackson Army Band.

Those who attended the event include, Ms. Patricia Pittman, Medical Center Director/CEO; Col. Kevin Shwedo, Deputy Commanding Officer for the US Army Basic Combat Training Center, Center of Excellence at Fort Jackson; and Councilwoman Leona Plaugh of the 4th District in Columbia, SC. Special guest Hal Koster of The Aleethia Foundation located in Washington, DC covered the entire cost of the event. The Aleethia Foundation is a non-profit dedicated to helping injured troops.
