Eight year old Evan Green visits with World War II Veteran Felix Wilczynski.

A very special visitor walked through the door of VA Western New York Healthcare System in Batavia on October 12. The eight year old boy dressed in camouflage was ready to meet and talk with some of his Veteran heroes.

Evan Green didn’t want presents for his last birthday. Instead he insisted on collecting puzzles, toiletries, food, word games and T-shirts for Veterans. As toured the facility, his eyes lit up followed with a big smile as he began speaking and meeting his Veteran heroes.  One of the Veterans he spoke with was Felix Wilczynski, who served in World War II in the Air Force. When Evan found out Felix was an Air Force Veteran, he was thrilled to show him the Air Force patch on the back of his hat.

Evan’s grandfather William Locke, an Army Veteran, is his hero. Evan received the first Voluntary Service Awesome Kid Award for 2012!

“The visit was one of the most moving days of my career,” said Royce Calhoun, Assistant Director. “It was inspiring to see this youngster’s patriotism and the joy he brought to Veterans and employees.”

He also brought Veterans Day cards he and his classmates made to hang on medical center walls for Veterans to see as they come in for their appointments. He loves his country and is proud of those that have served both past and present. He says when he gets older he would like to join the Army just like his grandfather.
