The Shelter Island Chapter, American Red Cross is an all volunteer chapter whose jurisdiction is the Township of Shelter Island, NY. The island is approximately 11-1/2 square miles with one-third of it in land preservation. There are two separate ferry companies, which maintain service to each fork for eighteen hours per day. Many houses are second homes to summer visitors. There are no nursing homes, apartment buildings or low income housing units. The island is also divided into several private communities, with their own organizations. The island population increases in the summer due to day tourists, summer rentals and boaters.
Hours of operation are based on community needs and volunteer availability. Call 631-749-1580 for information.
