HISTORY: The original United States Army Hospital built at Fort Leonard Wood, a cantonment style hospital comprising of more than 2,000 beds, was constructed in 1941. The hospital was built to support Fort Leonard Wood, constructed as a result of the Army Expansion Program of 1940.

Full operation in the old cantonment facility continued until Aug. 16, 1965, when services began in a new facility. In 1974, post officials broke ground for a 180-bed nursing tower and clinic addition. Completed in 1977, the new addition more than doubled the space previously allocated for outpatient clinics and raised the inpatient capacity to approximately 500 beds.

The present facility, a six-story structure containing 472,600 square feet of clinic and ward space, provides inpatient and outpatient care to more than 34,000 beneficiaries and is staffed by more than 1,000 physicians, nursing and administrative professionals.
