The VA Regional Office (VARO) is located in downtown St. Louis, at 400 South 18th Street. The St. Louis VARO administers Compensation and Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment benefits for Veterans who reside in the State of Missouri. It is also one of only four offices nationally that administer the GI Bill and other VA education benefit programs. As a regional education processing office, the VARO pays education benefits to eligible Veterans, service members, and dependents attending colleges and universities or other VA-approved training programs in 16 states.

The VARO also conducts a number of activities associated with outreach to the public. In addition to assisting walk-ins at its downtown location, the St. Louis VARO is home to a VA National Call Center. It also conducts outreach throughout the State of Missouri to special target populations, such as the homeless, former POWs, service members nearing separation from active duty, and minority and women Veterans. Outreach to the military is particularly enhanced by the full-time presence of VARO employees at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, as well as a Military Services Coordinator working on an itinerant schedule at Scott Air Force Base, IL. The VARO also provides benefits information and assistance, including vocational rehabilitation services, at a satellite office located at the Kansas City VA Medical Center.
